How do we train scientists to understand biological systems in a mechanistic, integrative, and environmentally grounded way? Our approach goes beyond preparing scientists for a changing world. We emphasize a deep understanding of how biological processes operate across levels of organization, from molecules and cells to organisms and ecosystems, while placing these processes in environmental and evolutionary contexts. Trainees develop expertise in physiology, cell biology, and molecular approaches alongside quantitative and computational tools, and apply them to diverse aquatic systems under realistic conditions. We also emphasize awareness of environmental variability across time and space, and how it shapes physiology, evolution, adaptation, experimental design, and interpretation of results.
This integrative framework prepares scientists to ask causal questions and to connect fundamental mechanisms with real-world function. In parallel, we are committed to broad engagement in science education and outreach. We develop and participate in public-facing programs at Birch Aquarium at Scripps, bringing current research to diverse audiences. We also promote scientific training and education across Latin America through collaborations, mentorship, and capacity-building initiatives.
Together, these efforts aim to expand access to science and foster a more inclusive and globally connected scientific community. Interested in joining the lab?
